Mr. Mircea Snegur was born on 17 January 1940, in the village Trifanesti, district Soroca. In 1956 has graduated the High School of the village Frumusica, district Floresti. Mr. Snegur has graduated the Agricultural Institute of Chisinau in 1961. He has accomplished post-graduate studies at the Department of Animal Husbandry of the same Institute (1972). His speciality is agronomist-savant, scientific title Doctor of agricultural sciences.
During the period 1961-1968 he has worked as agronomist and director of kolkhoz in the village Lunga, district Floresti. Later, he had held the functions of: director of Experimental Station for Field Cultures (1968-1973); director of the principal Direction agricultural science of the Ministry of Agriculture (1973-1978); general director of the Institute of Scientific Researches in the Domain of Field Cultures in Balti (1978-1981).
In the period 1981-1985 is prime-secretary of the Edinet District Committee of the CPM (Communist Party of Moldavia). From 1985 to 1989 holds the function of Secretary of Central Committee of CPM.
On 26th of March 1989 he is elected deputy in the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, was deputy in the Supreme Soviet of the MSSR of XIth and XIIth legislatures, deputy in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova of XIVth legislature.
From 1989 to 1990 was the President of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Moldova. From 3 September 1990 to 1 December 1996 holds the function of President of the Republic of Moldova.
At present time, he is the president of the Party of Revival and Conciliation from the Republic of Moldova.
He was conferred the following state distinctions and honorific titles:
the Order “Badge of Honour”(1966),
the Medal “For Courage in Work”(1976),
“Order of the Republic”(2000), Diploma “Ad Honores” of the European Academy of Arts (1995),
the Diploma of Honour of the European Order of Merit and Gold Medal (1995),
Doctor Honoris Causa at the State Agricultural University of Chisinau (1996), Doctor Honoris Causa at the Ankara University (1996), Doctor Honoris Causa at the Free International University of Moldova- ULIM (2001).
Married has a daughter and a son.
